“Math at My Pace”:
Each student enters my classroom with a different background in mathematics. No two students work at the same pace and they especially don’t have the same skills at the beginning of the year. I’ve created an online curriculum in my class so that each student can work at his/her own pace. They no longer need to move through the content unit by unit before they have had a chance to grasp it, and they no longer need to slow down and wait for the rest of the class to grasp the concept. Instead, each student will start where their skills require them to and work at their own pace through each unit until they have the skill mastered.
This is new and this is different, so students will have some learning to do in regards to how to be successful. I have a Chromebook (laptop) cart in my classroom, so every student will get to work on their own device. Each student will come in each day and start wherever they left off the previous day. One student might be working on Unit 2 while another could be working on Unit 5. The beauty of this kind of class is that every student will be learning the things they need to learn.
Students will have goals each week regarding how many lessons/units they would like to accomplish. I will give them a pacing chart that shows them what lesson they should be working on for any given day in order to finish the course content within a given semester. If they finish the content before the semester, they will receive the credit early and start on the next math class. If they don’t finish the content by the time the semester ends, they will simply receive an “I” grade (incomplete) and they will continue to stay in my class until they complete the course. When they complete the course I will change the “I” to the grade that best describes how much they know.
Again, the beauty of this course is that each student gets to work at their own pace and they get the credit when the finish the course. They won’t have to start over from the beginning just because they didn’t understand all the content in a 5 month period. And they won’t be pushed along to unit after unit even when they didn’t understand the previous unit. And for those students who are working at a faster pace, they can receive credit in half the time.
My Website:
My website is listed above and it is where students will find their online curriculum each day. If students are unable to come to school or even if they are just feeling behind, they can always work from home if they have internet access. I recommend bookmarking the website.
What you will learn in Geometry:
There are 5 Units in Geometry and each Unit has 3 or 4 parts to it. Depending on how each student performed on the pre-algebra pre-assessments, they might have to work through some pre-algebra content too. For Geometry, I have put together notes, videos and activities for students to work through each class. Here are the titles of the units in Geometry:
Grading Policy:
You will receive credit for this course once you show me that you KNOW the content. You will work at your own pace through each unit. Once you complete all those units with at least a 70%, you will get your credit.
For each unit/part, you must complete all the notes and activities for each lesson. Once you complete all the activities, I will give you a “Quick Assessment.” Your grade on the quick assessment will determine your grade for that part. If you do not receive at least a 70% on the quick assessment, you will not be able to move on to the next part. Once you are able to get a 70% or higher on the quick assessment, you can move on to the next part. The goal is that you know the content before you have to move on. At the end of each unit there will be a bigger Unit Assessment. You must also get a 70% on this assessment to move on to the next unit.
I will give each student a pace scale that shows which lesson/part/unit you should be on for any given day. If you are behind that pace, your grade will show that you have a 0% on the units you haven’t done. This just helps me and you know where you are in terms of the actual semester system, but you will still be able to get your full credit once you complete all the course content. Even if you have an 80% average in the class, if you haven’t finished all 5 units, you will not be able to receive credit.
Your final grade will be a combination of your quick assessment scores and your unit assessment scores.
Grading Scale:
A 92.0% - 100% C+ 78.0% - 79.99%
A- 90.0% - 91.99% C 72.0% - 77.99%
B+ 88.0% - 89.99% C- 70.0 % - 71.99%
B 82.0% - 87.99% F 69.99% and below
B- 80.0% - 81.99%
Class Expectations:
My expectations are that…
Tardy Policy:
If you are tardy 3 times in one quarter, I will write a referral to give to Mrs. Holmes. I believe her policy is to give a lunch detention sometime. If you are tardy 3 more times, I will write another referral. Once the new quarter starts, the tardy count will start over.
